I need something a bit lighter, do you do lighter?
We do four colours of finish in two timbers, Pacific Kauri and Rimu - finishes range from Natural Colour to very dark Brown/Black.
What choice of handles do you have?
We have a sampleboard in our showroom with a wide choice.
Will you make this piece a bit bigger?
Yes, although going away from standard can attract reasonable costs. We can go wider, higher, deeper, add or delete doors, drawers, shelves.
How quickly do you want it?
We can try to make it as soon as we can. We like to over estimate all our delivery times and deliver earlier to surprise.
What is Pacific Rimu?
Basically it's the same tree (Podocarp family) grown in a different country. The quality of the imported Rimu is better than our locally grown trees, as timber in NZ is from gullies and wind fallen. The Pacific Rimu is a straight, clean from knots and defects and export grade.
Is Rimu a hard timber?
It's harder than pine timber and softer than diamonds! Both Pacific Kauri and Rimu are ideally suited to furniture for your home. We guarantee both for 10 year minimum, in reality it is going to be good in a lifetime.
Why is it from Fiji? Why don't we use NZ Rimu?
NZ Rimu is not as good quality, as they don't cut great trees down anymore.
Which is harder? Kauri or Rimu?
Both about the same.
Will you do this furniture in another timber? – eg pine, oak?
No sorry. And we won't use your own timber either.
Do I need to oil or polish my furniture?
No. Excess oil and some polishes ie (pledge) contain silicone's that aren't great for lacquered surfaces. Simply wipe over with a warm soapy cloth. Oiled furniture attract unwanted dust, wax feels sticky, while our finish is long lasting, enhances the grains in the timbers and adds a good degree of protection against water and heat.
How is the furniture finished off?
Rimu – Oiled sealed and polished in lacquer.
Kauri – Stained sealed and polished in lacquer.
Do things leave marks – eg. If a cup is left on will there be a mark?
No, it's a great finish. Get a table as wet as you like for up to two hours (out in the rain if you wish) then dry it completely with a dry cloth. But you can't leave it outside, it's not outdoor finish.
Hot coffee cups, plates are no problem but again, use you common sense, don't put a boiling pot straight off the stove on the table. You will fry the lacquer.
Is this the best deal?
All our furniture is exclusive to our stores, therefore you cannot compare apples for apples. Forest's Owner, Paul Entwisle often checks out the other furntiure stores, and we know our furniture is value for money.
Can I have a discount?
Never on a single piece! But if you are buying a large quantity, there is no harm in asking!
